In 1996, Congress passed joint resolutions to establish a memorial honoring Dr. King to be built in Washington, D.C. and completion is expected by late 2008. Adjacent to the F.D. R. Memorial and in a direct line between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, this monument is conceived as an engaging landscape experience to foster understanding and inspire peaceful progress toward equality for all people. The Memorial will use natural features to powerfully convey recurring themes from King’s work of justice, democracy and hope. Drawing from Dr. King’s rich language, many elements are inscribed with excerpts from his sermons and public addresses.
