LISTSERVES: DO YOU KNOW TO USE THEM?

The Board uses a list serve as a tool to communicate with membership. We have one list serve to communicate with REALTOR® members and one list serve to communicate with MLS and ECBOR Board members. We are currently working on a list serve for member’s office staff and one for Affiliates.

This is an effective way of communicating with each other. The Board can send one e-mail and everyone receives it. This also allows the members of the list serve to respond to what they read. When someone responds the e-mail comes to the Board office and if it is meant for the rest of the list serve we release it, if it’s meant for us we don’t release it. This is a called a “monitored” list serve. We chose this method because many of the responses are not meaningful to the group and examples of that would be listed below.  We do release all messages that are relevant to the list serve. If you wish to utilize the list serve send an e-mail to: ECBORmembers@InternetCrusade.com  If you do use the list serve you will need to read the informal rules that apply to all list serves.

Network etiquette (often referred to as "netiquette") are informal rules and procedures established for users of e-mail and list serves to provide them with some simple guidelines to make these electronic communication tools more enjoyable and less annoying or bothersome. Subscribers to the various list serves are asked to follow these guidelines when posting messages and communicating electronically.

  • Be sure to include a descriptive subject line. E-mails received with no subject line may likely be perceived as spam by a filter and deleted upon arrival.
  • If you request a response in a message posted to a list serve, make it very clear at the beginning of the message that responses should be sent directly to you, and provide your e-mail address. Be sure to include your name and contact information so members are able to respond to you directly.
  • Personal replies should be directed to specific individuals rather than to the entire list serve. Remember to cut and paste the sender's e-mail address when replying rather than simply hitting the "Reply" button, which sends the response to the entire list. Below are some examples of replies sent to an entire list serve, which would have been more appropriate to have been sent directly to the individual whose message prompted the reply.
    • "Thanks."
    • "OK"
    • "Thanks. Hope you are well. All the best."
    • "Yes." or "No, unfortunately."
    • "I would also." (Sent as response to whether additional info was desired)
    • "I would like more information. Could you e-mail me directly?"
    • "Thanks, this will be very helpful. Sorry for the delay in replying."
    • "Welcome!" (Response to someone introducing themselves as a new subscriber.)
  • If you receive a notice that your original e-mail was "rejected", find out the reason for the rejection before resending the message so people do not receive duplicate e-mails. Often times, the message was indeed sent and received by many subscribers.
  • List serves should not be used for the solicitation, promotion, or sales of commercial products. i.e. your boy scout/girl scout or ball team
  • Be respectful and considerate of your colleagues in your postings. Whether you disagree or become upset with someone's response or use of the list serve, reply to them directly.
  • Reply to the entire list serve if everyone will benefit from the information. If you would like to thank someone for his or her response, please send your message directly to that person, not the entire list.
  • Include an electronic signature for each posting (name, affiliation and contact information) in case one of the members of the list serve would like to contact you directly.
  • Avoid sending large attachments
  • Don't use all caps. Using all caps usually indicates you are angry!
